Meet
Lettuce - One thing that baseball stadiums are known for is great food. Baseballtown is no exception. From dollar hot dogs to the Churger, FirstEnergy Stadium has some delicious treats.
Although tasty, baseball food is not always the healthiest. That’s why the R-Phils employ a group of vegetables to entertain the fans, while promoting smart eating habits at the same time.
We sat down with Lettuce after a long jog around the stadium.
How often do you and the other veggies prepare for a race?
Well, the race is the exciting part, but I like to run no matter what. Nothing feels better than getting out, being active, and staying healthy. All the veggies feel the same way…we all take a nice run everyday.
So, you guys train together? Does that make the race any less competitive?
Not at all! The other veggies are my closest friends but when that race starts, I’m all business. I’m trying to win just like they are trying to win.
You’ve also been known to sing the 7th Inning Stretch as well, how did that come about?
Well, the R-Phils decided last season that the singer would be someone different every night. When they asked the veggies if any of us would want to do it, so I volunteered because I obviously have such a great voice.
Between racing and signing, what is your favorite part of your job?
Honestly, as much fun as those can be, I like walking through the stands after the race the most. It’s great to see all the fans and hear their cheers after a great race. I love it when little kids are so excited to see vegetables.
Everyone wants to know…what do fresh vegetables do during the cold winter off-season?
It can be somewhat of a struggle. Vegetables do a lot better in warm weather, but we try to keep moving to stop the cold from getting to us. We make sure the stadium is clean and freshly painted, and just that everything looks good for when the season starts.
Do you have a special message for any of your young fans?
Of course! Make sure you’re always eating healthy and staying active. It’s fine to eat whatever you want at a baseball game, because that’s just what you’re supposed to do. But I want you all to make sure that when you are at home, and it’s dinner time, make sure you eat ALL of your veggies. Nothing could make me happier!
